Ah, autumn—the time when the world spins in a tapestry of gold, amber, and crimson, when the air is laced with a chill that whispers of the long winter’s sleep to come. For Jade Ann Byrne, the turning of the seasons was not just a natural cycle but a sacred rite, a passage that spoke to her Druidic and Gypsy Pagan soul, echoing through her bones like a long-forgotten song. And as she wandered through this world, she carried with her the weight of her German and Irish ancestors, whose stories wove together the old ways with the whims of nature itself.
Her ancestors, both Irish and German, had always revered the turning of the year, each autumn more meaningful than the last, bound by the cycles of harvest and the fall of the leaf. You see, the Germans—staunch and resolute—believed that the autumn wind carried not just the scent of dying leaves but the very breath of their god Wotan, who marched through the forests with his Wild Hunt, gathering souls that wandered too far into the woods. Their word for autumn, Herbst, harkened to the harvest, that most ancient of rituals, where men and women gathered the fruits of their labor before the long sleep of winter.
In Ireland, Jade’s ancestors were of a different breed—fierce and wild, gypsies, and healers. To them, autumn was Samhain, the thinning of the veil between worlds, a time when the spirits of the dead roamed freely, welcomed by bonfires and feasts of plenty. The Gypsy Pagans of old danced to celebrate the cycle of death and rebirth, knowing well that what died in the autumn would rise again in the spring. As they cast their harvest wheat into the fire, they honored the earth for her gifts, knowing that every fall of the leaf was just the earth’s way of resetting the clock.
But it was the Druids who taught Jade to read the winds and listen to the trees. “The wind knows what’s coming,” her grandfather would say, his voice gruff as he brewed potions from wild mushrooms and nettles. Druids believed that every acorn that fell held the soul of a warrior, and each tree that shed its leaves whispered the ancient tales of battles fought and kingdoms fallen. In those forests of the ancient world, the Druid priests would gather under the oaks to worship the great cycle—the ever-turning wheel of the year.
Back then, it wasn’t autumn—it was the season of Harvest, as it was called in the old West Germanic tongues. Herbst for the Germans, Hairst for the Scots, and Harvest for the English. These words were reminders that the season was once ruled by the rhythms of the land. The land fed the people, and so they honored it by giving thanks with songs, festivals, and offerings. But as the towns and cities grew, fewer hands touched the soil, and the old term began to fade. Harvest no longer referred to the season, only the act of reaping. Soon, new words crept into the lexicon—autumn, from the Latin, and fall, a term closer to home.
The “fall of the leaf,” as the English poets of the 16th century mused, became a phrase for what had always been known in the simple beauty of the countryside. The phrase “fall of the leaf” sounded so poetic that it caught on, and soon “fall” became the common word for the season. When English settlers sailed across the Atlantic, they took this word with them. In the bustling New World, where the trees turned a fiery red and gold, “fall” became the dominant term, while back in Europe, they clung to the more formal “autumn.”
But for Jade, it was always Harvest, always the season when the earth called its children to gather around. In those moments of falling leaves, she could feel the hands of her German ancestors harvesting wheat, and the rhythmic beat of the Irish bodhrán drums in the distance, celebrating the last of the summer’s bounty. The wind seemed to carry their voices, a harmony of the ages.
Jade’s German grandfather, Heinrich, a stern old man with hands as calloused as an ancient oak, would tell her that the leaves falling were not just the end of the trees’ cycle but an invitation for something new. He’d talk of his ancestors, their blood tied to the Erdgeist—the spirit of the earth—who nourished the land with every dying leaf. To him, every time the wind whipped through the trees in autumn, it was Wotan himself summoning those willing to brave the Wild Hunt.
Her Irish grandmother, Saoirse, would paint a different picture—one of mist-covered hills and the ever-watchful eyes of the Fair Folk. For her, the wind carried the voices of the Banshee, the fairy queen who cried out when the veil between the living and dead grew thin. “In autumn, Jade, you must always listen carefully. The dead aren’t far, and neither are the secrets they keep.”
And as the winds of autumn blew through the modern world, with its cities and its concrete, Jade would sometimes find herself wandering, thinking of her ancestors. She knew that the old ways were not lost but hidden, buried beneath centuries of words and stories. “The earth remembers,” she’d say, as she scattered seeds into the soil, honoring the cycle, the death that leads to rebirth.
For Jade Ann Byrne, autumn was not just the fall of the leaf but the rise of ancient magic—a time to dance with the dead, to harvest the fruits of one’s labor, and to prepare for the long winter’s rest. The stories of her ancestors lived on in every gust of wind, every crunch of leaves underfoot, and every flicker of firelight on a cool autumn night.
And so, as she watched the leaves fall, Jade smiled, knowing that the old gods were never far. Whether called autumn or fall, the season spoke of the eternal cycle—and that, in itself, was enough to keep the fires of old burning bright in her heart.
With all my love 💜

The Art of Being Jade Ann Byrne: More Than Meets the Eye (It’s not just Raspberry Jam Donuts & White Cake ;o
In a world obsessed with labels and the black-and-white, I stand as a testament to the colorful spectrum of humanity. Hello, lovely souls! I’m Jade Ann Byrne, your resident purveyor of joy and defender of individuality, typing away to share a piece of my heart and the essence of my being.
They say curiosity killed the cat, but I believe it’s the assumptions that dull the sparkle. I’ve been asked — more times than the stars in the night sky — a question that is as invasive as it is unimaginative: “What is inside your pants?” This question, while posed in many forms and through various mediums, fails to capture the true essence of a person.
So today, I turn this hurtful query on its head and instead celebrate what’s truly inside me — not sugar, spice, nor anything so trite. No, what thrives within me is the substance of dreams and ethereal delights.
Inside me is the resilience of unicorns, creatures born of hope and the relentless pursuit of the magical. I’m made of glitter, a million tiny reflections of the love and light I receive and give back to the world tenfold. My heart beats to the rhythm of cupcakes and sprinkles, each pulse a reminder of the sweetness and variety life offers.
Raspberries and strawberry donuts? Oh, they symbolize the tang and zest I bring to every challenge I face. Each burst of flavor is a testament to the complexity and depth of my spirit. My soul is a canvas painted with the boldest and most vivid colors of life.
To those who dare to reduce our existence to the physical: I say, look deeper. We are all masterpieces of our own design, undefined by the corporeal and unfettered by the mundane.
To my beloved community at Planned Parenthood of the Southwest, who sees beyond the facade and cherishes the individual: I cherish you. Truest of the healers, only those with the largest love in their hearts can bear that cross. Tomorrow, as we meet, I bring these images as tokens of my gratitude — for you make me feel seen, heard, and valued. I could never wished for a stronger force. I shall honour you again.
In solidarity with all who have felt diminished by prying eyes, let’s redefine the narrative. Let us celebrate what truly makes us who we are: our passions, our kindness, our unique quirks, and our boundless capacity for love.
So here’s to the beauty within us all, the unquantifiable and the indescribable. Let’s embrace the glittering chaos of our inner worlds and share it unapologetically. For in the end, it’s not what’s inside our pants that defines us, but what’s inside our hearts.
Welcome to my culinary adventure! Today, I’m excited to share with you one of my favorite recipes: California Raised Pot Roast Beef and Made in California Cheese Quesadilla. This mouthwatering dish combines the rich flavors of slow-cooked California pot roast beef with the gooey goodness of melted cheese, all folded inside a crispy local tortilla. Join me on this flavorful journey as I guide you through the step-by-step process of creating this delectable delight!
Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients To start, gather the following ingredients:
1 pound pot roast beef, cooked and shredded
4 large flour tortillas
1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, Monterey Jack, or a blend)
1/2 cup diced onions
1/2 cup diced bell peppers
1 tablespoon olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
Optional toppings: salsa, guacamole, sour cream
Step 2: Prepare The California Pot Roast Beef If you don’t have cooked pot roast beef ready, prepare it by slow-cooking a well-seasoned roast in a crockpot or oven until it’s tender and easily shredded. Season the beef with your favorite herbs and spices, such as garlic, thyme, and paprika. Once cooked, shred the meat using two forks and set it aside.
Step 3: Sauté California Grown Onions and Bell Peppers In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onions and bell peppers, and sauté until they become soft and slightly caramelized. This will enhance their flavors and add a delightful sweetness to the quesadilla.
Step 4: Assemble the Quesadilla Lay a flour tortilla flat on a clean surface. Sprinkle a generous amount of shredded cheese evenly over half of the tortilla. Next, spoon a portion of the cooked and shredded pot roast beef onto the cheese. Top it off with a spoonful of the sautéed onions and bell peppers. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step 5: Fold and Cook Carefully fold the tortilla in half, covering the filling. Press it gently to ensure the ingredients stick together. Repeat the process for the remaining tortillas and fillings.
In a clean skillet, heat a bit of olive oil over medium heat. Place the assembled quesadillas in the skillet and cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they turn golden brown and crispy. The cheese inside will melt into a gooey, irresistible filling.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy! Once cooked, transfer the pot roast beef and cheese quesadillas onto a cutting board. Use a sharp knife to cut them into wedges. Serve them hot with your favorite toppings like salsa, guacamole, or sour cream. The combination of flavors and textures will surely tantalize your taste buds.
There you have it, a step-by-step guide to creating a scrumptious pot roast beef and cheese quesadilla.
